Nobody wants to smoke their weed out of a dirty bong. So, what’s the best way to clean a bong when it gets all filthy?
Now that marijuana legalization is sweeping the country, we will soon have a wave of virgin tokers crowding the pot shops, looking to try their first legal high. They have never been a part of the cannabis culture before, so they’ll be asking a lot of questions we discovered the answers to long ago through trial and error. Maybe you’re the newbie… if so, let’s talk!
First off, my newbie friend, make sure your bong is glass. What the hell are you doing smoking out of a plastic, PVC, or wooden bong? Cleaning those is some advanced, graduate-level stoner work you’re not ready for yet.
Second, don’t let some head shop clerk or some catchy display fool you into spending money on some “Super Duper Dirty Bong Cleaner” formula. You don’t need special store-bought formulas to clean your bong any more than you need to buy Windex when the vinegar and detergent you already have will work on your windows quite nicely.
Instead, head to your local grocery store and pick up just two items:
- Coarse rock salt (like the kind you’d use in making homemade ice cream)
- Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (70 percent or 90 percent, it doesn’t matter)
That’s it. Now, just empty your bong of the filthy bong water. Pour some rock salt into the bong, so you have about a half-inch sitting on the bottom. Add the alcohol until it covers the salt, plus a little more.
The amounts aren’t important, really. The idea is to have enough salt and alcohol to swish around, but not so much that it’s going to spill out.
Make sure you’re covering the holes of your bong. Corks are great for this, but if you’re dextrous, you can probably cover the holes with your thumbs or palms.
Now swish the salt/alcohol mixture around in your bong. You’ll be shaking your bong up and down, left and right, trying to make the mixture swish around all the dirty spots in the bong. The salt is like a scrub brush with its coarse granules and the alcohol helps to loosen and dissolve the tars and resins in there.
Your bong should be crystal clear and good as new. Empty the salt/alcohol mixture and rinse your bong thoroughly. Now, get yourself some legal weed and let’s have a session!
