Hopefully all Weed News readers had a great Christmas. I know I did. I spent a lot of time with family and friends and even received a few presents. I gave out some marijuana treats as presents this year, which is perfectly legal in Oregon. Gifting someone marijuana is legal in not only Oregon, but also Colorado, Alaska, Washington D.C., California, and Massachusetts, and eventually Nevada and Maine.
Christmas is a great time for legal marijuana sales in America. Apparently not everyone received a marijuana gift for Christmas, or if they did, it didn’t stop them from hitting up the local marijuana outlet. Marijuana sales were up considerably leading up to the Christmas holiday. Per USA Today:
Pot shops are reporting the average purchase is up 21% in the week before Christmas, according to the marijuana-software firm Baker, which runs store customer-service systems. The most popular items: marijuana-infused edibles like brownies or cookies.
Also near the top of the list are vaporizers, pipes and other smoking accessories, Baker reported. The company said the data holds true across the states where it serves medical and recreational stores: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
Alcohol is a popular gift around the holidays. Hopefully these numbers indicate that more people are gifting marijuana instead. That’s not to knock those that consume alcohol, which is OK by me. But marijuana is 114 times safer than alcohol, so the more people making the safer choice the better. Some of the states involved in the data are medical marijuana states, where gifting marijuana to a non-patient (even an adult) is prohibited. Hopefully people making those purchases kept them to themselves!
