NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton’s Pro-Marijuana Rant

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton’s Pro-Marijuana Rant

Let’s hear it for former Portland Trail Blazer, NBA Hall-of-Famer, and devoted Deadhead Bill Walton! Coming back from commercial break on the ESPNU coverage of the college football championship game, he called on marijuana to be removed from Schedule I and for blanket amnesty for all marijuana offenders.

“Marijuana should not be a Schedule I drug and all the people who have been in trouble for it for all these years? Obama, just blanket amnesty and just move on to the future.”

It’s not the first time Walton has spoken up about marijuana in his capacity as a television guest or analyst. In 2015, he spoke up during coverage of a college basketball game on ESPN2:

“The War on Drugs has been an absolute failure across the board and somebody’s got to step forward and we’re looking for Obama to step up and say, ‘why are we punishing people for things that are legal?’ ‘Why are people languishing in jail for things that are legal?’ Look at the front page of the Register-Guard right here in Eugene, addressing that same exact point.”

And it’s not exactly like Bill Walton’s love of weed has been any secret for the past forty-odd years… I mean, c’mon, nobody is this naturally mellow after a rookie-season-ending foot injury.
