How Do You Make Marijuana Butter?

Marijuana Butter Recipe

A bulk of the marijuana recipes out there call for marijuana butter. There are other recipes that are based around other marijuana infused items, but marijuana butter is the most common based off of my experience. Other things are just as good or better at absorbing marijuana, but things made with butter taste so good! Full disclosure – I am a husky blogger, and I’m by no means a foodie. Take any food related advice from for what you will.

But I like marijuana infused food as much as the next person, and I also like saving money, so I have learned over the years how to make a handful of edibles. I make them either for special occasions like April 20th, or other special occasions like I just want to ride the higher high. I also like to have edibles around in case I get a chest cold. I personally make my butter a certain way, but there are many, many ways to make butter. There is no ‘right way’ as far as I’m concerned, but I know that it’s something that many people feel very passionate about.

I am not one of those ‘argue to the death butter crowd’ people. I like my method, and it has served me well over the years. With that being said, I know of others that do it a completely different way, and swear by their method, and I eat all of their treats with great delight just as I eat my own. I try to not discriminate in that way I suppose! The first thing that you will need to consider when making marijuana butter regardless of the method is what marijuana will be going into it. You can use trim or flower, so if you don’t have enough flower or it’s too pricey, trim is just as good, you just have to use more of it to get the same potency.

You will also want to decarboxylate the marijuana prior to making marijuana butter. That involves grinding up the marijuana and putting it in the oven on a baking sheet at 230 degrees Fahrenheit for 110 minutes. Once you have the decarboxylated marijuana you need to decide which method of making butter is best for you. The method you use will also determine how much marijuana you need. The most common, and arguably the easiest way, to make marijuana butter is via a crockpot. A recipe for that can be found below:

1 lb unsalted butter
1 cup water
28 grams of decarbed flower or 40 grams of decarbed trim

Put all of the ingredients into the crock pot and turn it on low. Cook for 8 to 24 hours (stirring occasionally) depending on your personal schedule, and how potent you want to make the butter. The longer you let it go, the more the marijuana will infuse into the melted butter, with the max being 24 hours for complete infusion. After you are finished cooking the mixture, strain it through some cheesecloth or a very fine strainer. Butter maker pro tip – For big clumps that are left behind that aren’t straining well, I recommend using a potato ricer! Let it sit for an hour then put the strained mixture into the fridge overnight. The next day you will see that the butter is floating on top of some undesirable looking liquid. Remove the butter layer on top with a fork or knife and use the finished marijuana butter as desired.

Another popular method which requires less marijuana is using a saucepan on a stove-top burner. Below is a recipe for that method:

1/2 lb unsalted butter
2 cups of water
14 grams of decarbed flower or 20 grams of decarbed trim

First bring the water to a boil in the saucepan. After the water is boiling, add the butter. Let the mixture boil until the butter is melted, at which point add the decarbed marijuana and reduce the temperature to a simmer. Let the mixture simmer for about 3-4 hours. From there strain the marijuana from the liquid using a fine strainer or cheesecloth (or a potato ricer!), putting the strained liquid into a bowl or container. Let it sit for an hour then keep it in the fridge overnight. In the morning remove the top layer of butter similar to the crockpot method, and enjoy accordingly.

With both the crockpot method and the stove-top method, you can double the amounts of ingredients to produce twice as much butter. People will also use a double boiler method to make marijuana butter, and many other methods. High Times put out a series of videos exploring the different ways to make marijuana butter. All four videos can be found below, along with a 5th video comparing the results:

Like I mentioned previously in this article, there is no ‘right way’ to make marijuana butter. There are many right ways. It’s a matter of preference – potency level, ease of method, and many other things will determine which way of making marijuana butter is best for you. Realize that what is best for you might not be best for the next person, and that’s perfectly fine.

The absolute easiest way to make marijuana butter is using a Magical Butter machine. I own one and it virtually eliminates the smell, totally eliminates the need to ‘stir occasionally’ and completely automates the process. It’s not for everyone, as other methods are cheaper. But if you have ever stunk up your house spending all day making marijuana butter, and have wondered if there was a better way, the Magical Butter machine just may be for you. There are many recipes online based around the machine, for butter as well as tinctures and oils.

If you have something that you would like to add in the comments section about marijuana butter, including your favorite method and why, by all means do so. That way others can benefit from you knowledge.
