New Gallup Poll Shows Record Support For Cannabis Legalization

Gallup has been asking Americans if they support cannabis legalization since 1969. Back then the poll found that only 12% of Americans supported cannabis legalization. The number has consistently risen over the years as more and more Americans started getting on the right side of history. Zoom forward to last year’s poll, and the number was up to 60%. The results are out for this year’s poll, and I am EXTREMELY happy to say that the number rose significantly to a record-setting 64%.

This is a very big deal, and a huge blow to the efforts of cannabis opponents. Prohibition has failed, and legalization is working, which is something that almost two thirds of Americans now recognize. Below is a message from the Marijuana Majority discussing the historic Gallup poll results:

A new Gallup poll finds that 64% of Americans now support legalizing marijuana. That’s up four points since a year ago and more than double the level of support for ending cannabis prohibition in 2000.

The poll also finds a majority of Republicans supporting legalization for the first time.

Opposition to legalizing marijuana has also fallen over the past year, from 39% to 34%. Gallup has been asking the question since 1969, when only 12% of Americans backed legalization.

Tom Angell, founder and chairman of Marijuana Majority, released the following statement:

“These new numbers, and the continuing trend they confirm, show that legal marijuana continues to be way more popular than almost any politician — increasingly so. Despite threatening rhetoric from some Trump administration officials, Americans’ support for regulating marijuana like alcohol only continues to rise year over year. That bodes well for efforts to pass cannabis laws in more states in 2018 — both on the ballot and through state legislatures. Nearly two out of three Americans now say that marijuana should be legalized, and it would be politically disastrous for the Trump administration to allow Jeff Sessions to break the president’s campaign pledges to respect state laws.”

Marijuana Majority is dedicated to making sure the media, politicians and government officials treat marijuana as a serious issue that is important to a growing majority of Americans.
