Many people think that they know how many grams are in a pound of cannabis, only to find out that they are wrong. That was me once upon a time. I came across the opportunity to acquire a pound of cannabis on occasion throughout the years that I was a medical cannabis patient, and I always assumed that a pound of cannabis weighed 448 grams.
The way that I arrived at that number was by taking an eighth of cannabis, which is 3.5 grams, and multiplying it by 128. I used the number 128 because there are 8 eighths in an ounce, and there are 16 ounces in a pound, therefore, there are 128 eighths in a pound (128 x 3.5 = 448). Whenever I would acquire a pound, I would make sure to check that it weighed 448 grams to determine if I was provided what I was entitled to, or if I had been shorted (or on rare occasions, got extra!).
Then one day I was hanging out with a friend who was watching me weigh a pound that I had recently acquired. When he asked me how much it weighed, I informed him that it was exactly 448 grams and that was what I was hoping for. ‘You are not mad that you were shorted?’ he asked, to which I replied that I was not being shorted.
My friend quickly grabbed a pound of food out of the pantry. On the labeling, it said that the product was exactly a pound and that it weighed 454 grams. I seem to remember it being a bag of Dorito chips, but don’t quote me on that part since we were pretty blazed by that point. An actual pound is just slightly under 454 grams (453.592 grams) but I imagine the food company rounded up to make it simpler for consumers.
I will never forget the feeling when I realized that I had essentially been living a lie. I didn’t feel cheated in any way, because virtually everyone that I knew that had acquired pounds throughout the years was under the same false impression that I was in that a pound weighed 448 grams. Perhaps I should have paid better attention in my science classes in high school rather than skipping class to smoke the giggle bush under the bleachers!
