What Are The Best Stoner Movies Of All Time?

best top stoner movies movie

I love stoner movies. Not everyone does, and I respect that. Not even all marijuana fans love stoner movies, and I’m fine with that, as long as people don’t hate on me for loving them. To clarify, a stoner movie is usually a comedy, but also can be a drama. I don’t consider documentaries to be stoner movies, with the exception of maybe Super High Me because it’s so funny. I know, that’s a subjective system, but there are some movies that I feel go more into the educational realm rather than being more for entertainment purposes. There is a place for both types of movies in my heart, so realize that I’m not trying to put down marijuana documentaries.

There are many movies out there that are not stoner movies, but are great to watch while stoned, if that makes sense. For the purpose of this article, I will not include those because a list of them would be enormous, and virtually never ending. Some people like to watch certain types of movies when they are stoned, and others like something entirely different. A stoner movie doesn’t have to show marijuana start to finish, but it does at least have to have a stoner at the heart of the story. An example that I always offer up is the film Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd. In the movie Eddie Murphy’s character smokes a joint, but it’s the only scene in the movie involving marijuana, so that film wouldn’t count for the purpose of this article in my opinion.

I recently posted a question on the Weed News Facebook as well as on my personal Facebook ‘what is the best stoner movie of all time?’ It’s a question that I have asked quite a few times over the years. Almost all of the responses were for movies that I have seen before except Smiley Face. It was a very popular response, and it’s one that I intend to check out ASAP. I didn’t include it below because I have included it here 🙂 Below are what I feel to be the best stoner movies of all time. If I missed one, which is no doubt a guarantee being that it’s a subjective exercise virtually entirely based on opinion, please place the title in the comments below along with any strong feelings you may be experience towards me at the time! The movies below are in no particular order because, honestly, ranking them is nearly impossible.

Friday (1995)

Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) star in this film that somehow is over 20 years old now. ‘I know you don’t smoke weed, I know this. But it’s Friday, you ain’t got no job, and you ain’t got shit to do…Imma get you high today…’ Such an epic film from a stoner standpoint. Better have Big Worm’s money!

Super Troopers (2001)

This comedy about Vermont State Troopers is full of marijuana. Full of laughs, and for those that were living under a rock and were unaware, a second installment is on the way. Super Troopers 2 is filming while I write this blog post, and I am assuming that it will likely end up on this list shortly after I watch it, if it’s anything like the first.

Up in Smoke (1978)

Really any Cheech and Chong movie (other than Corsican Brothers) could make this list, but Up in Smoke reigns supreme in my eyes, and based off of responses I have received in the past, it reigns supreme in most people’s eyes. This movie is the OG of stoner movies. I laugh every time I see it, without exception. Easily makes the #1 all time stoner movie designation for many people.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Not everyone in this film smokes marijuana, but Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) more than makes up for it. The character of Spicoli has found a spot in the hearts and minds of marijuana consumers everywhere, and his character alone warrants a listing on any top stoner movies of all time chart. This movie never gets old.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

‘Do you have a joint? It would be a lot cooler if you did…’ There are so many amazing stoner quotes from this film that it’s impossible to recite them all. This film is about a group of high school students in 1976 and the adventures they go on. Marijuana is everywhere, because after all, it was the mid 1970’s. If you have not seen this film, what have you been doing with your life?

Grandma’s Boy (2006)

In so many ways, this film seems to be loosely based on my life. I have lived with grandma before, I am savage at video games, and obviously smoke like a broken chimney. The only thing that ever stopped me from become ‘Grey Bush’ is that I never met a Mr. Cheezle. I have known plenty of Dantes though, minus the lion and kung fu monkey.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Much like the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High, this film does not feature marijuana from start to finish. However, ‘The Dude’ loves his reefer, and is an expert on the art of smoking roaches. The character of ‘The Dude’ has won over the hearts and minds of marijuana lovers all over the world to such an extent that this film will forever be on my list of best stoner movies of all time.

Pineapple Express (2008)

Being perfectly honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this movie when it came out (gasp, I know). It seemed a bit silly and over-the-t0p to me the first time that I saw it, and the fake marijuana plants and plot were not to my liking. However, with each time I watched the film, the more it grew on me, to the point that it’s now one of my favorite films of all time, marijuana or otherwise. Even with the ultra fake grow house! Item 9, cross joint, lingerers…so many things from this movie are now a part of permanent stoner culture.

How High (2001)

‘I figure if I study high, take the test high, get high scores! Right?’ This film is funny, and is all about the marijuana. Method Man and Redman crush it in this film.

Saving Grace (2000)

I had no idea when this film was coming out, even though I was looking to watch any and every film about marijuana at the time. After it was out on DVD for awhile, someone recommended that I watch it. It’s one of the most underrated stoner movies of all time in my opinion. Most people have seen the other movies previously mentioned, but if you haven’t seen this one, check it out. It’s about an older lady who has to grow marijuana with her groundskeeper to save her house, and her groundskeeper’s job. Super funny, especially the scene with the old ladies that run the local corner market.

Easy Rider (1969)

They used real marijuana in this movie. It’s an older film, so it doesn’t have a lot of the high production value that today’s movies have. But it’s arguably the original stoner film. Newbies should check it out if they haven’t already.

Jay and Silent Bob (2001)

‘Rolling fatties, smoking blunts. Who smokes the blunts? We smoke the blunts…15 bucks little man, put that shit in my hand. If that money doesn’t show, then you owe me owe me owe’…I could do this all day.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

No stoner movie list would be complete without this listing.

Super High Me (2007)

This film is a documentary, yes, but it’s the only one that I think doubles as a stoner flick. Doug Benson is hilarious throughout this film. He refrains from smoking weed for 30 days, then goes on a weed binge. Very entertaining, and you may even actually learn something while watching the movie too!

Knocked Up (2007)

Seth Rogen and friends absolutely crush it in this film, which isn’t entirely about marijuana, but marijuana is found throughout.

Honorable mentions offered up by readers and Facebookers – Road Trip, Homegrown, Caddyshack, Mac and Devin go to High School, Kid Cannabis, Doobious Sources, We are the Millers, Clerks 2, Rolling Kansas, PCU, Mallrats, Fear and Loathing (only put down here because it’s an EVERYTHING type of movie, but had to be on this list somewhere!)
