DEA’s Praise Of Harry Anslinger Is Shameful

Marijuana prohibition has been one of the most harmful public policies in American history. Cannabis prohibition has cost enormous sums of taxpayer dollars to enforce and has ruined countless lives. The harm continues every day that federal cannabis prohibition remains in place.

The person responsible for cannabis prohibition in America is Harry Anslinger. Anslinger used a fear-mongering propaganda campaign that was built on racism and lies in order to bring about cannabis prohibition. Below are a couple of the quotes that Anslinger used in order to convince Americans and lawmakers to institute cannabis prohibition:

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.”

Those comments are racist and extremely repulsive. Anyone who says otherwise is likely a racist themselves. The quotes are just two of many. Harry Anslinger is a man that should only be labeled and portrayed as a villain, yet for some reason, the DEA feels it necessary to prop Anslinger up as someone that should be celebrated. The DEA posted the following tweet yesterday:

Using taxpayer dollars to celebrate Harry Anslinger is disgusting, and the DEA should be ashamed of itself. Racism has no place in America, and the DEA’s support of Harry Anslinger is unacceptable. If the agency wants to discuss its history so be it, but any mentions of Harry Anslinger should be coupled with asterisks that are geared towards explaining who he really was.

Harry Anslinger is not an American hero. Far from it. He is responsible for causing so much unneeded misery in this country, and because America’s failed prohibition has been emulated around the world, Anslinger is also largely to blame for the woes of international cannabis prohibition too. Shame on you DEA. I hope you get defunded and history looks back on your agency with condemnation. You are evil!
