Congressman Blumenauer’s Statement On Jeff Sessions Rescinding Cole Memo

Oregon United States Representative Earl Blumenauer sent out the following press release earlier today in reaction to Jeff Sessions rescinding the Obama-era Cole memo which provided protections for states that have legalized cannabis:

Representative Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, today released the following statement on reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions will rescind the “Cole Memo”—guidance established by the Obama Administration in 2013 to allow states to implement responsible marijuana laws without federal interference.

“This is outrageous. Going against the majority of Americans—including a majority of Republican voters—who want the federal government to stay out of the way is perhaps one of the stupidest decisions the Attorney General has made. One wonders if Trump was consulted—it is Jeff Sessions after all—because this would violate his campaign promise not to interfere with state marijuana laws.

“It’s time for anyone who cares about this issue to mobilize and push back strongly against this decision.”
