Members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade released recommendations and observations Tuesday about the government’s proposal to legalize recreational cannabis.

Pursuant to a motion adopted in the Senate on February 15, 2018, the committee was authorized to study Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, as it relates to Canada’s international obligations. The evidence and written briefs received drew attention to the potential international legal and political implications of the legalization of cannabis in Canada and the scale of their impact.

The Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology will consider the Foreign Affairs Committee’s report as it studies Bill C-45 at committee stage.
